About Wood

Firewood can generally be split into two catagories: Hardwoods and Softwoods.  As a general rule, softwoods are more easily started and burn more quickly while hardwoods are harder to light but produce a hotter, longer lasting burn.  So, which do you use?  It's recommended that you get your fire started with a softer wood and when you get a good bed of coals add the harder wood.  This results in a long-lasting, beautiful, and hot fire.

Softwoods:

Pine, Ash, Cedar, Fir, etc.

Easy to start and they burn faster with nice flames.  This is great wood if you want to start a fire quickly or don't plan on enjoying the fire all night.  This is the wood we include in our "Mixed Wood" package.  It is less expensive and is a great wood for a bonfire or for a fireplace as it starts easily and burns hot.

Hardwoods:

Oak:

Oak is a very dense wood so it provides longer lasting flames.  It burns clean and slowly.  It is considered to be the premium firewood for firepits, cooking grills, and ovens.  It is a firewood that lasts a long time and leaves you with great coals that you can use to start your fire the next morning.  It is more expensive but most people agree that it is worth the cost.

Eucalyptus:

Eucalyptus is another great hardwood.  While it is harder to get started, it's a great "budget" hardwood that provides a lot of heat with its nice, long-lasting flames.
